India and OnePlus are mutually benefiting from each other. OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T were among best-selling premium devices in the country and also drove the momentum of the growth of this segment in the second, third, and the fourth quarters of 2018. Even as Samsung regained its dominance over the Indian market during the last quarter with strong sales of the Galaxy S10 series, OnePlus 6T remains to be the most popular smartphone in the segment of smartphones priced above ₹30,000. Since India contributes to roughly one-third of OnePlus’ global business, the company plans to pay back its patrons by rolling out some features specific to India soon.
At the launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro (review) in India, the company announced that it will introduce some special features to OxygenOS, especially for Indian users. These features include Caller Identification, a smart SMS app, Work-Life balance, OnePlus Roaming, and alerts for cricket scores. These features will be making way to the OxygenOS Open Betas on the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T, starting with the cricket scores feature which arrives later this month while the rest of the feature will start rolling in by June.
First off, the Caller ID feature will be fused into the Dialer app so that you will be informed about the callers without third-party apps like Truecaller. Besides actively identifying callers, the feature will also mark spam calls so that you can avoid picking them up.
Meanwhile, the smart SMS app by OnePlus will automatically categorize and organize up to 39 different categories of apps for easy and contextual actions. For instance, the feature will identify messages about your future train, bus, or flight bookings and will organize information to clearly indicate details like seat and coach numbers, time, etc. Similarly, you will also be able to track arriving courier packages using the smart SMS app on OxygenOS. The feature is also expected to help you keep track of your expenses by managing transaction alerts. The functionality is not exactly new and we have seen similar functionality on Xiaomi’s MIUI 10.
The Work-Life balance feature coming to OnePlus 6/6T will allow you to set a schedule for notifications from work, so that you can draw a line between work and your personal life. Besides blocking notifications from work during non-working hours, you can also disable notifications that may distract you while at work. Users will be able to set presets for Work and Life modes and select apps under each setting that will show notifications.
Additionally, the OnePlus Roaming feature is likely to allow users to get economical roaming plans when they’re traveling abroad for seamless communications, even without changing their primary number or buying a local SIM.
Furthermore, since the game of cricket is no less than one of the many religions in India, dedicated cards for cricket scores will be available via Shelf in the OnePlus launcher.
A lot of these features will enhance the usability of OxygenOS for Indian users, but we also hope that the company takes due care of the privacy of data. This will decimate concerns as in the case of the recent cleaner feature added to the File Manager app in OxygenOS beta earlier this month.
