Google rolled out Android 10 to all Pixel and Essential smartphones last month. Android 10 update apart from bring new gestures and privacy features also brought dark theme to Android’s ecosystem. Now nearly a month after Google rolled out its Android 10 mobile operating system, Instagram has updated its platform adding support for Android 10’s dark theme.
The news was confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a tweet. “Starting today, you can use Instagram in dark mode on iOS 13 or Android 10. Turn dark mode on your phone to try it out,” he wrote on Twitter.
Dark mode on Instagram’s Android based app looks exactly its iOS counterpart. The app interface is all dark with the text shining in white. This includes the Instagram logo on top. All the sections of the app – such as the IGTV, the Settings and the Profile — have been redesigned to take match the system-wide dark theme. The only splash of colours…more specifically…the Instagram colours that you can see in Instagram after enabling the dark theme is in the Stories section on top. The overall interface is quite similar to the dark mode available on Instagram’s iOS 13 based interface.
Instagram’s dark mode is available only on Android 10 powered devices, which means that you will be turn Instagram dark only if you have a Google Pixel or an Essential smartphone. However, if you have an Android 9.0 Pie, you will have to till you get Android 10 update on your smartphone to use Instagram’s dark mode.
So how do you enable dark theme in Instagram on your Android 10 powered device? Well, If you have a Google Pixel smartphone, you need to turn on the system-wide dark mode. Once you enabled dark theme on Android 10 and downloaded the latest version of Instagram on your smartphone, next time you open the Facebook-owned image sharing app, you will see the app sport a true black colour, which looks exceptionally gorgeous on an OLED screen. Sadly, there is no toggle switch within the app to switch between the light and dark themes, which is similar to the way the app has implemented dark theme on iOS 13. Simply said, Instagram’s dark theme is dependent on your smartphone’s system wide dark theme and there is no way you can turn the lights out on Instagram without switching to dark mode on your smartphone.
