Amazon last month announced that users in India will be able to interact with Alex in Hindi. However, support for Hindi on Alexa came with a critical limitations. Users couldn’t interact with Amazon’s virtual assistant in Hindi and in English seamlessly. Simply said, users needed to manually switch between the two languages in the Alexa app. Now, Amazon is overcoming this limitation by introducing support for multi-lingual mode in Alexa.
With the multi-lingual mode on, users in India will be able to speak with Alexa in Hindi and in English seamlessly without toggling between the two languages. This feature is available in India starting today. ‘This multilingual mode could be useful in Indian households where users speak both Hindi and English interchangeably. It would be available from October 9,’ the company said in a statement to IANS.
So how do you enable multi-lingual mode in Alexa? Well, the trick is to select English/Hindi in the device settings on your Alexa app. Once you have made the changes, you will be able to talk to Alexa via your Amazon Echo smart speaker in English and in Hindi without switching over. But before you look for the relevant settings, ensure that you have the latest version of the Alexa app installed on your smartphone.
If you have any one of Amazon’s smart displays – the Amazon Echo Spot, the Amazon Echo Show or the Amazon Echo Show 5 – you can enable multi-lingual mode by selecting the relevant option in the language settings of your smart display. Be sure to install the latest firmware on your Amazon Echo smart display before you look for the new language settings.
To recall, Amazon announced multi-lingual mode for Alexa last month at the Amazon Event 2019. At the time Amazon had announced that support for multi-lingual mode will be available in Alexa soon. And now the feature has gone live in India.
So what can you do with the multi-lingual mode enabled? Well, you say something like – “Alexa, Diwali kab hai?”. Alexa would understand this and respond to your query in English.
