2019 is undeniably one of the best years for the festival releases in Kollywood. Early, this year both Petta and Viswasam grossed nearly 390 crores globally and now, the two Diwali releases— Bigil, and Kaithi also touched the magical mark. Together these four films grossed nearly 780 crore rupees across the globe. If you add satellite, Hindi rights and digital, these four films contributed more than 900 crores.
A few years back, if two biggies clash at the box office on a festival weekend, distributors and exhibitors wouldn’t encourage the producers. But after Viswasam and Petta proved them wrong, this Diwali also witnessed Thalapathy Vijay’s Bigil and Karthi’s Kaithi.
While Bigil grossed around 294 crores globally, Kaithi has grossed just above 100 crores. Interestingly, both these films have also become the career highest figure for Vijay and Karthi respectively. In Tamil Nadu, Bigil has just managed to achieve break-even mainly due to the high selling price.
The film’s producers AGS Productions sold the entire Tamil Nadu rights to Screen Scene and they, in turn, sold it to sub-distributors for a higher price. Had Screen Scene released the film on its own, Bigil would have earned handsome profits to all the parties in the state. But even now, the film earned decent profits to a few distributors in Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, Bigil has grossed nearly 141 crore rupees and surpassed Viswasam box office record in the state.
Bigil is currently the all-time number one Tamil film in Kerala beating the previous best (Shankar-Vikram’s Ai) by minting nearly 19.65 crore rupees. The film is also a profitable venture in Karnataka and the two Telugu states. The film grossed more than 20 crore rupees in the two Telugu states and has become the highest grosser for Vijay in the Tollywood trade belts.
Despite crossing more than one million $, Bigil incurred a minor loss to the distributors in the US but most of the other overseas buyers have entered into the profit zone. In Malaysia, Bigil is the third-highest Indian film grosser after Dilwale and Kabali.
While Bigil is the highest-grossing Tamil film of this year beating Viswasam and Petta, Kaithi has yielded maximum profits to all the buyers. Made at a shoestring budget, the film generated huge profits to the Kerala and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana distributors. In Tamil Nadu, the film’s producer SR Prabhu himself released in major territories so he is the happy man as the film already grossed more than 50 crore rupees in the state.
Kaithi is a surprise winner in the US, the film grossed nearly 429k$ in the particular territory and declared as a blockbuster. Despite clashing against a biggie like Bigil , Kaithi had a solid run in all the territories including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and overseas. In Kerala, the film grossed more than 8.1 crore rupees and in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, Kaithi grossed nearly 16 crores.
Kaithi also managed to gross more than 17 crores in overseas territories and thus, has become the highest grosser for the actor in his career. So if fans ask to name one film as Diwali winner, one can’t do it, as both these films brought in huge revenue to the trade and have become profitable to both the producers.
